The majestic Conti Guidi Castle, a handsome 13th century architecture equipped with a lascivious female ghost, the passionate Matelda. She was the young and unfaithful wife of the Count Guidi, who seduced and killed hundreds of local youngsters. After one too many disappearances, she was locked in a tower and left there to starve to death.

At times, it was used as a safe haven, military checkpoint, and an institution for people with mental illness. However, it is most well-known for its macabre use during the bubonic plague epidemic when victims were quarantined and burned on the grounds. Today, Poveglia maintains a frightening reputation, and locals believe this “island of ghosts” is riddled with unhealthy spirits due to its dark history.
