Hotel Union Øye, Øye 🇳🇴

A few years after the hotel’s grand opening, a maid called Linda fell head over heels in love with a German soldier who served Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Because there’s no tragedy without a love triangle, Linda’s lover was of course, already committed to another. After asking his wife for a divorce and being refused (the shame!), he killed himself. Then Linda, upon learning her lover’s fate, drowned herself.

Fast forward several hundred years and Linda still hasn’t gotten over her grief. She can be heard sobbing inconsolably in the Blue Room from time to time.

Dalen Hotel, Dalen 🇳🇴

Guests and staff tell frequent stories of the notorious Room 17, where the ghost known as “The English Lady” spends her restless afterlife. Formerly known as Miss Greenfield of England, The English Lady checked into Dalen Hotel on a spring morning in the late 19th century and spent several months there as a guest.

No one at the hotel knew she was expecting a child, but when staff entered the room after her departure, they found a dead infant. She was arrested and charged with murder but took her own life before the trial could begin. To this day, a table is set for her in the hotel’s restaurant.

Nes Kirkeruiner, Vormsund 🇳🇴

Initially built in the 12th-century, Nes church was burnt down by the Swedes in 1567. It was then rebuilt in the shape of a cross in 1697 before the Swedes burnt it down again in 1854. The church was not rebuilt, although conservation work started in the twentieth century, and the ruins are now the perfect place for everything from small picnics to concerts.

Despite its history, there are no ghosts of unfortunate churchgoers who were burned alive, and Swedes visiting the ruins are no more at risk of a haunting than anyone else. Yet visitors have reported experiencing a pressure on their chest, difficulty moving, troubles with their electronic equipment, and glimpsing shadows and figures disappearing behind corners.

The main suspect behind these experiences is Jacob Christian Finckenhagen, a priest at the church who died in 1837. By some accounts, Finckenhagen was a rather formidable figure in the community and died a rich man, despite his lowly occupation.
Some stories say that he died of old age, while others say he hung himself in his church. Other stories claim that the ghosts are actually his children, who are allegedly buried behind the altar.

Toftaholm Herrgård, Vittaryd 🇸🇪

This hotel was once a manor house, owned by a wealthy baron. The baron had an attractive young daughter, and a young man fell in love with her.

Unfortunately for the young man, he was a commoner, and the baron refused to allow a marriage. Instead, he found a suitable husband for his daughter (suitable for the baron, anyway). On the morning of the wedding, the young man hanged himself from a beam in the manor house.

The room where he committed suicide is now Room 324; it is said to be haunted by his unhappy ghost.
